Zdenka Kolar-Begović obtained her BSc degree in mathematics and physics from the Faculty of Education in Osijek in 1993. She received her MSc degree in the field of mathematics from the Department of Mathematics, University of Zagreb in 1999.  In 2003, she obtained her PhD degree in the field of mathematics from the Department of Mathematics, University of Zagreb. After graduation, Zdenka Kolar-Begović worked as an assistant at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Education in Osijek. Since 1999  she  has been employed at the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Education in Osijek. She was Vice head of the Scientific and Organizing Committee of the International Colloquium Mathematics and Children 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013,  and Head of these committees 2015, 2017 and 2019. She is the editor of four monographs Mathematics Teaching for the Future (2013), Higher Goals in Mathematics Education (2015), Mathematics Education as a Science and a Profession (2017) i Towards New Perspectives on Mathematics Education (2019). She has been  Head of the Department of Natural Sciences at the Faculty of Education (2006-2014 and from 2018 till now). She was a Vice dean for business relationships and international cooperation at the Faculty of Education  (2014-2018). She has been Editor in Chief of Osijek Mathematical Gazette since 2012.

She is a member of the Geometry Seminar at the Department of Mathematics, University of Zagreb, the Croatian Society for Geometry and Graphics, the Croatian Mathematical Society  and the Osijek Mathematical Society and.  She is a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews. Dr Kolar-Begović has published 44 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals and presented papers at 25 international scientific conferences.

She is teaching the following courses Teaching mathematics I, Teaching mathematics II and Mathematics and gifted students.

She graduated from the Faculty of Education in 1996 in Biology and Chemistry and obtained a professional title of Biology and Chemistry Teacher. She graduated in 2000 and received her PhD in 2005 in the field of ecology, biology, natural sciences at the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Zagreb University. From 1998 to 2008, she worked in the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Education (later the Biology Department ofthe Josip JurajStrossmayerUniversity of Osijek) as a PG student, assistant and senior assistant on the project "Protection of the KopačkiRitReservoir" and was teaching from the natural sciences group: Practices and Seminars from Invertebrates, Marine Biology, Protozoa, Theories of Organic Evolution, Tertiary Teaching II, Embryology and Organic System Evolution). From 2008 until today she is employed at the Faculty of Education. From 2008 to 2010 she was the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. From May to October 2010 she was acting vice-dean for education, and from October 2010 to October 2018 the vice-dean for science. Since October 2018 she chairsthe Subdepartment of Natural Sciences of the Department of Natural Sciences of FOOZOS. She teaches in Natural Science I, Natural Science II, Ecology, Field Teaching, Ecological Education in the Pedagogy, Ecology for Sustainable Development, Knowledge of Plants and Animals. She is also an author and a co-author of textbooks, workbooks, methodical manuals, books, book chapters, over 50 scientific papers and numerous professional papers from the field of biology and pedagogy. She is a collaborator on numerous international and domestic projects ("Peacemaking the education and &employment: answers to new challenges and opportunities", the European Night of Researchers (TPTF_ERN) package/theme: Strossmayer days, LUMEN "etc.).

About the Department

The Department of Natural Sciences brings together teachers from the Faculty of Education whose scientific interest is in the fields of mathematics, information science, natural, biotechnical, biomedical, technical and interdisciplinary sciences. The field of teaching of the departmental teachers includes mathematical, informatics and science subjects in the study programs and lifelong education programs of the Faculty of Education. The members of the department participate in the modernization of the existing courses and in the design of new courses in the mentioned fields. The department's teachers are the authors of numerous papers in international peer-reviewed journals and participants in a number of scientific and professional conferences, and have been involved in a number of domestic and European projects. It is necessary to point out the numerous activities of the Department members in the field of popularization of science within the framework of the Science Festival, Brain Week and European Researchers' Night. The Department teachers are members of the scientific, program and organizational committees of a number of scientific and professional conferences, and members of editorial boards and reviewers of scientific and professional journals.


The Department of Natural Sciences, as part of the Faculty, in 2007 started an international scientific colloquium Mathematics and Children, which is held every two years and is attended by scientists from home and abroad. Since 2016 the members of the department have been participating in organizing a symposium with international participation Kopački rit - Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, whose work includes scientists and experts from home and abroad.

The department brings together 14 members who work within two departments, the Department of Mathematics and Informatics and the Department of Natural Sciences.
